Initiative Coordinator - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Climate and Land Use Alliance Initiative

Summary Description
The Initiative Coordinator will be responsible for implementing, monitoring, and coordinating grant making activities in the Brazil Initiative of the Climate and Land Use Alliance, which seeks to accelerate the development and implementation of effective, efficient, sustainable, and equitable public and private sector policies to promote reductions in greenhouse gas emissions that equal or exceed targets set by Brazil’s national climate change policy. The initiative includes grantmaking administered by the members of the Climate and Land Use Alliance (www.climateandlandusealliance.org), a collaborative initiative of the ClimateWorks, David and Lucile Packard, Ford, and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundations. The Alliance seeks to catalyze the potential of forested and agricultural landscapes to mitigate climate change and deliver economic, social, and ecological benefits.

The Alliance’s Brazil Initiative promotes national and state policy efforts that advance Brazil’s global leadership on effective, efficient, and equitable climate –friendly land-use and encompasses work that includes (1) enhancement of transparency, access, and use of information regarding land –use emissions (2) analyses and advocacy related to the national climate change policy and other policies related to support the development of a national, integrated land-use strategy; (3) encouragement of private-sector, low-emission land use practices; (4) capacity building for indigenous and other forest peoples. Particular attention will be given to policies related to Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+).


Working closely with the Director of Programs of the Climate and Land Use Alliance, and other program officers at the member foundations, the Brazil Initiative Coordinator will develop grant making and other program activities to implement the initiative strategies, including substantial direct interaction with the Amazon Fund and other relevant BNDES instruments, and with other donors active in this arena.


Specifically, the Brazil Initiative Coordinator will review the current status of climate and land use issues in Brazil, the recently developed strategies related to The Climate And Land Use Alliance Brazil Initiative, and the status of the initiative grants in the existing portfolios of the Alliance and its member foundations; assume responsibility for plans to implement and coordinate grantmaking within this Initiative; solicit, review, and respond to grant proposals; prepare recommendations for funding; and work with other Alliance staff to develop and implement learning strategies related to the Initiative.


The Brazil Initiative Coordinator will be expected to provide intellectual leadership in the field of climate change and other policies related to rural land use in Brazil and to work closely with the Alliance Director of Programs and a small team of member foundation staff and consultants who have a portion of their time allocated to this initiative. S/he has primary responsibility for Alliance grants administered by both the ClimateWorks Foundations. The Brazil Initiative Coordinator is also expected to collaborate broadly with scholars and practitioners, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private sector leaders, and other donors on issues of common program concern. Frequent travel within Brazil is expected, along with occasional travel internationally.


Qualifications

Minimum 10 years experience in the fields of climate and/or land use policy in Brazil, natural resource management, and / or rural development with a combination of policy analysis, advocacy, communications, and implementation experience. Demonstrated capacity to understand and engage with policymaking processes, work effectively with government, NGO, private sector and donor partners, and function fluently (verbal and written) in Portuguese and English. Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, evidence of effective accomplishment as part of a team and a proven track record of achieving change are also required. Excellent analytical, organizational, and oral and written communication skills in both Portuguese and English. An advanced degree in public policy, natural resource management, social sciences or other relevant field is preferred.
